September 30th, 2010 | No Comments | Posted in HP

The HP LaserJet P4014n Laser Printer is tough and expandable enough to handle the needs of a high-volume office. But it is also expensive and requires high prices for additional components. And on top of its graphic quality is pretty dismal. (We like similar complaints about the cheap Lexmark T652n have.)

Performance is usually strong. In our tests, high on the LaserJet P4014n out at 34.9 pages per minute for text-only pages (HP rates the printer at 45 ppm), which is above the average. Graphics speeds were ahead of the pack, too, but with poorer results. Images looked washed-out, lacked detail and had a rough texture statements.

The control panel is clean, elegant design you through an elaborate series of menus and options. The LCD displays up to four lines of black type and the operating buttons are characterized by intuitive symbols, or labels. Menu options start with a “show me how” category, the guide to such typical operations such as clearing paper jams, and inserting comprises subjects. The LCD is set into the curved top front-profile, so the printer must be at eye level or among them, to be positioned for the users to see them.

As the printers themselves as the main input tray is built like a tank, with virtually no flex. All guides are color coded and easy to adjust. The unit has space for four trays ($ 249 each) for a maximum capacity of 3600 pages. HP also offers a 500-sheet, five-bin mailbox sorter with a $ 399.

The cost of consumer goods are reasonable. HP ships a 10,000-page toner cartridge to the printer and sold the same size replacement for $ 173, the work of around 1.7 cents per page – about average for a high-yield cartridge. Nevertheless, other high-energy laser, such as the Oki Printing Solutions B6500n Extra-High-yield cartridges offer for as little as 1.1 cents per page – a significant cost savings over the life of a high-volume printer. You have to replace eventually the LaserJet P4104n’s fuser and transfer roller ($ 300 kit), but not until the printer has 225,000 pages.

Lexmark C544DN Color Laser Printer Review

The printer takes a few minutes to calibrate itself at startup and after a long period of idling. The printer’s press materials say that it can be up to 25 pages per minute, and not our times were so far away, at about 20 pages per minute when printing from Word documents to the printer, 1,200-by-600 dpi mode. Timed results of our Photoshop and PDF document tests that require more processing time were in line with competing laser printers.

Double-sided printing saves paper and reduces waste, but there is no time savings. The C544dn uses a “Peek-a-boo” duplex process: one side of a sheet is printed and the paper from the printer, only to be drawn back into the printer for printing on the other side. The double-sided printing mode about 75 percent slower than printing the same document in one-sided mode.
