Brother MFC-7840W Review
It seems a bit of a rush to be among printer manufacturers currently produce a new generation of mono laser printers. The Brother is very much at the forefront when it comes to quality compact printers, it was only a matter of moments before they joined in the hunt with the new multi-function 7000-series.

The MFC-7840W is at the upper end of this series of five models, which start at 102.12 (plus tax). mainly aimed at the small business end of the market, this is a stable, solid square machine – 428 (W) x 396 (D) x 304 (H) mm – Weight 11.2 kg, which. But it is far from ugly, designed with sleek ergonomic curves and colors gun metal gray and silver.
This is fax a four-function all-in-One combines scan, copy and print. On the top of the 50-sheet ADF, and is at the bottom is the front-loading, 250-sheet paper feeder. Unfortunately, there is no automatic duplex facility, so you have double-sided printing to be processed by hand. The included toner cartridge has to be pushed into its housing at the front and, apart from the usual attachment cable, which is the most physical work out of their way.

Brother claims it is the only compact 4-in-1 multifunction device with Wi-Fi (802.11b/g) built networks, and in addition you have separate cables and USB ports. Setting up the wireless feature is a piece of cake: just type in your WPA or WEP encryption key on the numeric keypad and LCD, and within seconds are blocked.
The included software also allows the driver and printing options via USB in the usual way. The two top models of the 7000 series have a downloadable “ifax” function so you can send faxes for free over an existing computer network to compatible devices.
The control panel is one of the clear and user friendly we have seen, with fax, copying and printing menu buttons on the left and instant set-up buttons for fax, scan and copy embedded under the centrally-placed, two-line LCD text. Besides the two main paper holder, there is also a straight paper feed make life easier with more tricky media such as envelopes, labels and cards.

In terms of operating speed, Brother offers 22 pages per minute at the default settings, the first printed page to emerging markets in less than 10 seconds. In practice, it has about 25 seconds for the machine to warm up and then print speeds tend to be fairly consistent, whether through the draft, standard or high quality settings with an average of 16 pages per minute. For example, we have a 70-page game walkthrough, large amounts of screenshots in a little more than 3 minutes contained and did an A4 photo in 30 seconds to scan copies.
In addition, manages a OCR to scan in 7 seconds. There were good quality reproduction on ‘press release’ style text, but it was clearly struggling when trying to read text with smaller or more italic fonts. The print quality was generally good, with no extraordinary: came (scan in color) scanned photos noticeably darker and grainier than printed in black and white, with significant amounts of banding at high resolution. Simple text rolled out relatively sharp, although it is less concentrated than, say, a newspaper article was copied.
While it is relatively cheap to run (a high-yield toner costs produce just under 40, 2,600 pages and there is a toner-saving setting), you have to weigh whether the admittedly excellent fax device and the wireless feature is worth slightly overweight price tag.
