In reviewing tech products, we can say that rarely say the name of a product really gives you everything you need to know. But in the case of Hewlett-Packard’s Plus, it’s true. The Photosmart is a beautifully designed, budget all-in-one inkjet printer that is ideal for home office tasks and photo printing tasks, but its strengths definitely lie with the latter. We saw printed in good quality (if unimpressive speeds) for scanning, printing text documents and copying. Printing photos is where this model really shines.
The printer itself is a simple black and gray design with a glossy surface and dull pages. The paper tray on the front of the body is located, is divided into two parts. The upper section is removable, it is the final resting place for the printed edition and includes the photo-paper tray. This piece is captured and equipped with an extendable arm prints. (We found this feature to gather after a scramble, a stack of paper dispensed with quickly.) Below the photo cartridge is the regular paper feeder that can be adjusted manually on paper up to legal size. This piece is not removable, but it is deceptively large and accommodates up to 125 sheets.

Assembly was easy and took only a few minutes. Install the software that Windows Live Photo Gallery and includes Smart Web Printing 4.5, lasted about 10 minutes, for example to allocate a total of 15 minutes to go, the Photosmart. (You must be the included USB cable for initial setup, even if you use the printer over a Wi-Fi network.) Once your software is installed, it will go through the process step by step, making it virtually foolproof. Here you will find on the HP Solution Center software that you manage your HP devices into a single interface can be introduced. (See A Solution Center icon on the desktop.)
Install the four starter ink cartridges was the only major assembly step after taking the printer from the packaging required. We estimate that the print head moves into place when you open the lid of the printer to allow for easy replacement ink. The printer monitors ink levels on both the LCD interface and in the HP Solution Center.
The 2.4-inch touch screen color display has a simple arrangement with a home screen of three symbols (photo, copy and scan). A glowing arrow to the right of the symbols resulting in four other large icons (Quick Forms, Setup, ink, and Wireless). Each button leads to another screen with easily readable symbols. The entire assembly is easy to navigate using the Back and Home buttons, to get away from you when you lost in the interior of the tree. Although the images are easy to read on the LCD, we wish the LCD was a little bigger, because we only checked the Lexmark Interact S605, which comes with a nice 4.3-inch LCD.

Along the front of the machine is a Memory Stick flash card slot (also supports Memory Stick Duo), one for SD and xD-picture card access and a standard USB/PictBridge port. The power switch is located on the right side of the front of the body. The reverse side of a USB port and AC adapter (which comes with a baking stone). The power supply projects from the rear part of the body, this printer can not push flush against the wall.
The Photosmart has a fun feature that lets you quickly print templates including calendars, notebook paper, and games like Sudoku, out of the printer interface.
Copying and scanning features on the Photosmart both are simple displays each with a limited selection of buttons preferences. When copying, you can select on the LCD, how many copies you want to do (one to 50), choose color or black-out, and adjust the size of the image that you copy, along with the display of a preview copy.

The scanner allows you to select the destination for the scan (a computer, memory card or USB drive). You can use the freedom to print, scan a card or flash drive, but you must use the HP Solution Center to scan your PC. to straighten the scan options, exposure, or use an improved color depth are available, followed by a simple “scan” prompt. When scanning in our computer, the process was easy and quick to put directly to the resulting document to a folder on our desktop.
For the printing of documents (such as photos contrast) offers the Photosmart Plus a series of pressure categories, including paper-saving, Fast/Economical, General-sided and Everyday. Within each of these modes are more options. (For example, with paper-Saving Print, you can choose between fast or normal, but not best quality). For our document-print tests, we used General Everyday Printing, and each of its modes, Fast, Normal and Best.
The Photosmart document print times were not particularly impressive. It printed our 20-page text document in normal mode in 1 minute and 54 seconds, a job, the Epson Stylus NX515, a relatively favorable AIO, about 30 seconds faster was. In Best mode, it took 11 minutes and 17 seconds. The Stylus NX515 did this same job about 3.5 minutes faster, and the Kodak ESP9, a comparable AIO, it has about 30 seconds faster.

We saw some improvements in the handling of our combined text and graphics document. It printed our 10-page text and graphics test file in Normal mode in 1 minute and 22 seconds, 5 seconds faster than the Stylus NX515. In Best mode, he has the job in 5 minutes and 28 seconds, 2 minutes faster than the Kodak ESP9 but about a minute slower than the Stylus NX515.
Photo printing is where the Photosmart caught up their competitors. When printing photos, there are only two categories to choose from: borderless or with borders, each of normal and best quality modes. For our tests, we have photos printed without borders. The Photosmart our print 4×6-inch color test photo in normal mode in 35 seconds, six seconds faster than the Kodak ESP9 and about 50 seconds faster than the Stylus NX515. It printed our 8×10 color photo in Best mode in less than 3 minutes, twice as fast as the Stylus NX515, although about 40 seconds slower than the Kodak ESP9.
Scan times were on the slow side, about 25 seconds to scan our page of text document. (The Stylus NX515 this task for 14 seconds is the faster, the ESP9 slowly for about 16 seconds.) Copying, on the other hand, was very fast, with the Photosmart takes about 12 seconds to copy our one-page text document; beating the ESP9 Stylus NX515 and about 25 seconds and one minute.

What gives up the Photosmart in speed, it makes up for in quality. Our text in draft mode prints were dark and legible, up to 3 points, although we saw some minor instances of the upper and lower parts of characters that something wrong was that the illusion of italics. In Normal and Best modes was clear and very readable text. The only problem was that we noticed in the draft mode, some horizontal barrier appeared on the photos from our text and graphic documents. This problem, however, disappeared in Normal and Best modes.
Copy quality was equally good. Our plain-text and text and image documents saw little loss of integrity in our copies. Copies of photos was especially nice to keep much of the original crispness and contrast.

Cost per page is also impressive. Ink cartridges for the Photosmart cost $ 9.99 for regular size tanks and $ 17.99 for high-capacity. Black cartridges cost $ 11.99 for the regular and $ 34.99 for high-capacity. With the high-capacity cartridges, the cost per page works, to 4 cents for black and white printing, and 7 cents for color. Thus, the Photosmart is about average cost of black and white, but on the cheap side color. (The Stylus NX515 is 3 cents for monochrome and 13 cents for color, and the Canon Pixma MX860 is 4.6 cents for monochrome and 12.4 cents for color.)
The Photosmart is an affordable model worth considering for your home or office, fast print speeds, photo-quality printing needs. Printing, scanning and copying are a bit slow, but we saw almost always acceptable quality. If document printing is your first consideration when we say look elsewhere, this model seems brightest with photos.
